APPLICATIONS: Cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, I & I
USE LEVELS: 0.2 - 0.6%
REGULATORY STATUS: U.S.-CIR approved; Europe-approved (0.6% max.)
COMMENTS: Broad spectrum anti-microbial. Very effective against gram-negative bacteria. Active over a wide pH range (3-9). Low toxicity, no irritation or sensitization.

POTASSIUM SORBATE
CHEMICAL NAME: 2,4-hexadienoic acid, Potassium Salt
APPLICATIONS: Cosmetics, food, pharmaceuticals, I & I
USE LEVELS: 0.05 - 0.5%
REGULATORY STATUS: U.S.-CIR approved, GRAS; Japan-approved (0.5% max.); Europe-approved (0.8% max.)
COMMENTS: Antimyotic. Effective primarily against yeast and molds. Effective only in acidic conditions (6.5 pH max.). Nontoxic.

SORBIC ACID

CHEMICAL NAME: 2,4-hexadienoic acid
APPLICATIONS: Cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, I & I
USE LEVELS: 0.05-0.5%
REGULATORY STATUS: U.S.-CIR approved, EPA registered; Japan-approved at 0.5% max.; Europe-approved at 0.6% max. Best for anionic systems. Effective only in acidic conditions (6.5 pH max.). Effective against mold, fungi and yeast, but also inhibits many bacteria.
